Lloyd Sederer, M.D.

Dr. Lloyd Sederer is an Adjunct Professor at the Columbia University, Mailman School of Public Health and Director of Columbia Psychiatry Media. Dr. Sederer served for 12 years as the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of the New York State Office of Mental Health, the nation’s largest state mental health system, where he continues as Distinguished Psychiatrist Advisor. He has been Executive Deputy Commissioner for Mental Hygiene Services in New York City (the “chief” psychiatrist for NYC), Medical Director and Executive Vice President of McLean Hospital in Belmont, MA (a Harvard teaching hospital), and Director of the Division of Clinical Services for the American Psychiatric Association. He has led the mental health disaster responses to 9/11 (as mental health commissioner in NYC), called Project Liberty; Hurricane Sandy (as NYS MH CMO); and other disasters.
In 2013, Dr. Sederer was given the Irma Bland Award for Excellence in Teaching Residents by the American Psychiatric Association, which in 2009 had recognized him as the Psychiatric Administrator of the Year. He has been awarded a Scholar-in-Residence grant by the Rockefeller Foundation and an Exemplary Psychiatrist award from the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI). In 2019, he received the Doctor of The Year award from The National Council on Behavioral Healthcare (representing over 3,000 mental health, addiction and social service organizations serving over 10 million patients). He has published seven books for professional audiences and five books for lay audiences (with another in press), as well as 500 articles in medical journals, non-medical publications and book, film, TV and theatre reviews. His writings have appeared in The New York Times/The International Herald Tribune, The Atlantic, The Wall Street Journal, The NY Daily News, The Washington Post, The Boston Business Journal, Commonweal Magazine, and Psychology Today, among other publications.
He was for 7 years the Medical Editor for Mental Health for the Huff Post, where over 250 of his posts and videos appeared; he also wrote a regular opinion column on mental health and the addictions for US News & World Report. He has taught medical writing for the lay public at the Columbia Medical School, Department of Psychiatry, for 18 sequential semesters. In 2019, Dr. Sederer founded (and now directs) Columbia Psychiatry Media, which produces topical, expert videos for Medscape/WebMD, as well as a Resident/Fellow hosted podcast and convenes conferences germane to mental health, the addictions, wellness and the social dimensions of health. He is Co-Founder and CMO of SessionTogether and Chair of the Advisory Board of Get Help. Dr. Sederer appears regularly on radio and television and has given a TEDx talk about mental illness and the family.
